Difference Between IGCSE Board and IB Board

Education is becoming technology savvy. New studies in the education field are coming up with vital information about how learning takes place in a student. What we thought is the best way to learn is not the best way anymore. The younger generation has a lot many tools at hand that can facilitate learning in ways that were not possible earlier.

With changing times and new studies being done, a new curriculum is put in place. These curricula are designed for keeping the student at the center. While the Indian Education board is still figuring out how to best incorporate student-centered learning in the existing curriculum, international curricula have already found a foothold in India.

IGCSE board and IB board offer their unique curriculum that not only keeps students’ interests at their core but also involves parents and the community in the process of learning.

Let’s understand what is Difference Between IGCSE board and IB Board.

IGCSE Board

 IGCSE board and IB Board

Firstly, IGCSE is not a board. CIE is the board under which one category of curriculum framework is IGCSE. Therefore, while comparing board, CIE vs IBO (International Baccalaureate Organization) is apt rather than IGCSE vs IB.

Salient Features:

  • The full form of IGCSE is The International General Certificate of Secondary Education.
  • IGCSE assessment is conducted by either of the two UK assessment bodies – Edexcel (or London Examinations) or Cambridge International Education (CIE). Thus, IGCSE comes under CIE board.
  • Cambridge International Education (CIE) is divided into 4 stages.
    • Cambridge International Primary Programme (CIPP, Age group – 5-11 years)
    • Secondary 1 (Checkpoint, Age group – 11-14 years)
    • Secondary 2 (IGCSE, age group 14-16 years)
    • Cambridge International A levels ( Advanced, age group 16-19 years)
  • IGCSE is just like the CBSE board in grade 10th. After which students can opt for IB (International Baccalaureate) board for giving their 12th board examination.
  • Cambridge Secondary 1 is for learners who are aiming for Cambridge IGCSE or Cambridge O Level.
  • Cambridge advanced is mainly for students who are aiming for international universities or higher educations.
  • Emphasis is more on English and Technical Subjects.
  • The curriculum is more advanced and there are a variety of subjects to choose from.
  • The curriculum is activity-based.
  • It is pursued by the students who will finally choose the IB program.
  • The curriculum is designed to achieve a good score in the external examinations. Thus, accountability is external.
  • Teaching resources and curriculum structure is provided to the teachers for a standardized learning experience.
  • CIE curriculum is syllabus and examination-driven.

IB Board

 IGCSE board and IB Board

IB board was formerly known as IBO (International Baccalaureate Organization)

Salient Features

  • The full form of IB is the International Baccalaureate.
  • IB offers 4 different types of educational programs.
    • Primary Years Programme (age group – 3-12 years)
    • Middle Year Programme (age group – 11-16 years)
    • Diploma Programme (age group – 16-19 years)
    • Career-related Programme (optional, age group – 16-19 years)
  • IB Career-related Programme is an alternative course for students who are clear about the direction of their career.
  • The curriculum planning is based on the theory of language and knowledge acquisition, creative activity and service, language and literature, individuals and societies, Mathematics, and the Arts.
  • IB curriculum allows teachers to have more control over the teaching pedagogy, which helps in meeting the needs of the students.
  • The curriculum is flexible and teachers have to work across departments to get the desired learning result.
  • The goal of education is skill-based than content-based.

Conclusion: IB program is more expensive than the CIE program, which sort of makes it an elitist program. Many universities around the world still do not acknowledge the IB Diploma as a relevant local diploma. However, the learning experience a student gets is custom-made as teachers are not bound by the curriculum. They can tailor the lesson plan as per the child’s needs.
