Nowadays, we want our children to be what they want. But, the fact is we want to secure their future based on what we feel will be good for them. Before you zero down on a school, analyze your child’s needs and goals. Once you are sure of what your child needs, you can decide whether a CBSE board or an ICSE board will be suitable for them.

Change of Boards and affiliation:

  • CBSE and ICSE are quite rigid about accepting students in classes X and XII.
  • Transfer from ICSE board to CBSE is accepted only if the family has shifted to a new place. Otherwise, CBSE accepts new students in class X or XII if they were previously enrolled in CBSE affiliated school. Many schools are affiliated to CBSE board, which makes it easier to locate.
  • ICSE board does not accept students from any other board in Class X or XII. In fact, if a student plans to take admission to Class X or XII of the ICSE board, he should have studied under the ICSE board in his Class IX or XI.

Bottom line: Enroll in a CBSE affiliated school if your job requires you to relocate often.

Teaching Methodology:

  • If you see your child’s future as a doctor or an engineer, then the CBSE school board will help prepare him for competitive exams. The CBSE curriculum focuses largely on Science and Maths, which will polish their skill of knowledge application.
  • ICSE curriculum, on the other hand, emphasizes majorly on Language, Arts, and Science. The curriculum requires students to participate in a lot of discussions, debates, role play, etc, thus, contributing a lot to developing a wholesome personality.

Bottom line: CBSE board is ideal for students preparing for competitive examinations. ICSE board is ideal for students who want a career in Arts or English Language and Literature.

Teaching Pedagogy:

  • ICSE board gives a lot of importance to projects and lab work. Due to this, the curriculum lays 20% weight-age on internal assessments. It believes in practical knowledge rather than rote memory.
  • CBSE board is slowly adopting the project-based learning approach. The revamped CBSE curriculum has room for project & activity-based learning.

Bottom line: Nowadays, both the boards are following the activity-based learning approach.

ICSE board — Good fit if you want your child to learn through projects and activities.

CBSE board — Good fit if you want to find a balance between various classroom activities.

Curriculum Flow:

  • CBSE syllabus is very organized with modules and units. In fact, the CBSE board has also given directions on how many periods should it take to complete a particular unit and weight-age of marks each unit carries in the examination. Therefore, making it extremely easy for the student to prioritize their study plan during exams and standardizing teaching and testing methods.
  • On the other hand, the ICSE curriculum is extremely detailed and the students are required to retain a lot of information. Students might have to appear twice or thrice for the same subject.

Bottom line: If you are looking for a less detailed yet effective curriculum, CBSE board is the one. If you are looking for your child to get exposure in various fields, then go for the ICSE board.

School Board Recognition:
