Why Do Teachers And Parents Need To Communicate?

Yesterday, I met my mother right after attending a Parent-Teacher Association or PTA meeting at my son’s school and I was plagued by her with questions about the meeting. For my mother, the PTA is a novel concept, one she has become familiar with only after her grandchildren began schooling. She is full of questions about the association and what is discussed when we parents meet the teachers. Her curiosity arises from the fact that when I was in school, she would meet my teachers only if there was an event in school or when she would accompany me to pick up my report card from school twice in a year which meant that there was no continuous interaction between them.

My mother also recalls how, during her school days, a summons from schools for parents to visit meant a sure-shot scolding for the concerned child because usually, such a summons was to let parents know that their child had misbehaved in school or was not studying. Those were the days when most parents didn’t know much about what was happening in school and teachers and parents did not really communicate with each other. But today, communication between teachers and parents is encouraged. Years of research in the field has now shown us that such communication not only benefits teachers and parents but also has a great positive impact on children.

Parent-Teacher Communication Ideas:

Most schools have now started employing several parent-teacher communication ideas such as PTAs, handbooks, and mobile phone communication to ensure a two-way communication between teachers and parents. Communication between teachers and parents benefit both parties in several ways. Teachers learn more about the home environment of the child and the personality of the child which helps them meet the needs of the child more effectively. Parents benefit by getting more involved in the education of their children and by receiving ideas from teachers and the school on how to help and support their children. Children also greatly benefit from regular communication between teachers and parents. They are more motivated in their work, they try to attend school more regularly, they show improved behaviour and they view homework and school in a more positive light.
